A variety of free photo editing and retouching software tools are available that are simpler to use than Photoshop, such as Picasa and GIMP. Picasa is more targeted to advanced users who work on photographs. GIMP is considered to be a very powerful image editor ( Figure 12-1 shows a screenshot from Photoshop Elements, a more recent addition to the line of Photoshop products. For more information, see Book I, Chapter 5. **Figure 12-1:** Photoshop Elements provides an easier-to-use interface. Knowing which tool to use for what purpose While understanding Photoshop’s capability is important, the real important thing to remember is that all of its tools provide numerous ways to achieve similar effects. Sometimes, the easiest and quickest way to accomplish a particular effect involves using a combination of tools from several categories. The most common types of tools include the following: Adjustment tools: These tools give you a way to automate the process of making corrections to an image. For example, the Levels tool helps you make overall adjustments to lighting and dark areas, the Curves tool gives you the ability to manipulate contrast and highlights and shadows individually, and the Shadows/Highlights tool provides a way to darken or lighten the shadows and highlights independently. Adjustment tools are particularly powerful tools for producing dramatic image effects. Filters: These tools enable you to apply special effects, give you a way to create image brushes, and even simulate some types of shooting. See Book I, Chapters 4, 5, and 6 for detailed descriptions of filters. Layer tools: These tools enable you to combine one element of an image with another. You can place elements on top of one another and work with the layer mask to create complex images. The Photoshop tools you need to use for layers include the following: Multiply layers: This technique lets you use the colors of one image on top of another, allowing you to create, for example, a red flower on top of a green one. Colorize layers: This feature enables you to create an overlay of a color over another image layer. For example, you can use it to apply a red filter over a black-and-white photo, or add a red fog to a photo of a city, making it look red. Erase layers: When you want to hide a layer or remove it completely, this tool is your best choice. (See Book

Q: Moving from TortoiseSVN to Git (and GitTfs) I have been using Subversion, and I am trying to move to Git. I have been using TortoiseSVN for management, and I want to move to Git, eventually migrating to Git with TFS (I have TFS 2010). I’ve downloaded and installed Git, and after some search I have discovered GitTfs, which would allow me to use Git and TortoiseGit side by side. After trying some simple scenarios, the default behaviour when you merge two branches is to accept the merge, but not the commit. In Subversion I can right click on the commit and choose Git, and then Git sends the change to the server, and then I can choose TFS, and have the same behaviour. It seems to me that I can’t have the same behaviour with GitTfs. I have: A TFS Work Item / GitTfs Work Item, where I have a Folder for each Git project, with a Branch for the Version. Git Projects, and TFS Work Items / GitTfs Work Items, where I have a Folder for each Git project. But when I start a merge, I can see I have this: The first project has a folder with a “main” branch, and “master” and “branch” branches. The second project has a folder with a “main” branch, and “master” and “branch” branches I start a merge, and I get this: Which is as expected. But there is no commit in the Work Item, and the “master” branch is the main branch. So, what happens is that I have to browse to the Git Repositories -> GitTfs -> MyTfsReposit -> Branches and see that branch is master. It seems Git doesn’t support the same multi-repository management as TortoiseSVN, so I have a couple of questions: Is there a way to set this behaviour? It seems to me that this behaviour is the expected one, and that I have made a mistake. If the behaviour I describe is the correct one, does GitTfs support the kind of behaviour TortoiseSVN does? A: The OP, as noted in the comments, is working with TFS Git Team Project but not Git repo.
