To see how you can use a versatile, feature-rich tool to create images that are both dynamic and beautiful, check out the multi-page feature in the Conclusion chapter, which includes a series of demonstrations on Photoshop techniques. Examining Creative Options in Adobe Photoshop Digital cameras do more than just take pictures; they also offer a range of creative options for modifying images. Photoshop provides various creative tools that enable you to alter images to meet the needs of your projects, whether those needs are the creation of a mock-up or the final printing or display of an image. But be prepared — you may not have the photographic equipment or expertise necessary to take advantage of all these different creative features in Photoshop. Don’t let that stop you from using these creative Photoshop tools, though. You can still enjoy the features Photoshop offers while using it the way the professionals do. Two types of editing tools are available in Photoshop: Tools: You can use the tools that appear on the Edit menus to modify an image. You use the tools to make changes, such as retouching skin, smoothing wrinkles, blemishes, and so on. Brush: You can also use the Brush tool to paint directly on your image. You can use the tools in different ways depending on the image you’re working on. You may use the Brush tool to paint in highlights, shadows, textures, or colors. For more on using brushes, see the section “Working with Adobe Photoshop Brushes.” Here’s a brief overview of how you use the various editing tools in Photoshop. The Adjustments panel This panel provides ways to adjust the color and tone of your image and provides the means to sharpen or soften an image, as shown in Figure 1-6. **Figure 1-6:** The Adjustments panel provides a selection of color and toning tools. The Select menu and Dialogs menu The Select menu and Dialogs menu (as shown in Figure 1-7) contain tools that enable you to specify where the image you’re working on appears. You can use the Select menu to select a specific area of an image to be edited, or you can use the Tools/Options/Colors drop-down menu to choose a color or a tone. You can also specify where the image you’re working on is placed on your canvas. For example, if you’re placing an image on a background

As a long-time photoshop editor I always say that anyone can learn Photoshop and I do not care which version you are more comfortable with, because both are pretty similar from the user interface. The main differences between PS Elements and Photoshop (PS) are: Elements is designed for photographers with little or no experience Photoshop is designed for photographers with no photography experience If you go deep into the user interface of Photoshop, there is a lot of differences that at first glance look very technical. Not to worry, I will try to keep this short and simple. In the following paragraphs I will explain each of the different categories of features in PS and in Photoshop. Tools If you want a list of all the tools available in Photoshop, check here. For Elements you have the option to use everything Photoshop or only the tools that a beginner needs. On of the top features of Elements is that it has fewer tools than Photoshop. The main difference is between the darkroom and the digital darkroom. Darkroom is a term used to describe having no distractions, focused on the only tool you use to get the job done. The reason for the “no distractions” is to focus on what you are doing. It is more like in video editing; you have no task managers, you do not check your email or social media for updates and your work is the priority. TIP: Good if you do not use an external light source it is best to work in natural light so you can use the light that you have available. Try to get as little noise as possible or if you are using an external light try to get it as small as possible. In Photoshop you have a lot of buttons and menus that can take you away from what you are doing. While in Photoshop you can follow it by using the Smart Objects (Saving Smart Objects), which are used for navigation and resizing the image. PS Elements have the image editing tools that you need to make your picture look like the one that you want it to look like. Menus Photoshop has a lot of menus, which are also very similar in PS Elements. The reason why I did not make an “Saving Photoshop” tutorial is because it is much easier to navigate Photoshop than to navigate Photoshop Elements. Photoshop/PS elements has the following main menus: Home: the beginning of the editing process a681f4349e

Global War on Christmas The holiday season is upon us, and for the fourth year in a row, I am too busy to buy a Christmas tree. Those of you who celebrate the holiday of Christmas are probably used to the late-November – early-December shopping frenzy. But as someone who shuns the holiday altogether, this year’s Christmastime shopping competition has seemed more than a little unfair. Part of the problem is that the holiday doesn’t have a very distinct definition. For many people, Christmas is simply Dec. 25, and so you’ll find them everywhere. Suddenly, the mall is full of Santas on stilts, nutcrackers popping into malls and stores, and a parade of shoppers dashing out of the mall, straight to the gym or car. As for the less-material Christmas, the day of family, peace and love, the preparations for the holiday are also getting squeezed. Businesses are becoming increasingly aggressive in their Christmas marketing, and not-for-profits are being bombarded with letters about their importance. For many, the lure of the season is the presents. But holiday shoppers are starting to recognize that for the first time in years, the traditional post-Thanksgiving buying frenzy doesn’t appear to be on the way. A year ago, I went on vacation and as of this morning, I have less than $40 to spend on gifts for friends and family. This is, of course, not unusual. I tend to avoid mass marketing and the Christmas rush in December anyway. But the past year has seen retailers form a new holiday alliance, a head-to-head competition designed to ramp up the holiday shopping frenzy. In 2003, the National Retail Federation, the National Association of Chain Drug Stores, the Retail Industry Leaders Association, and others called upon retailers and shoppers to find a way to make the Christmas season more meaningful. According to President of the National Retail Federation David Teather, those small tips reduced the amount of shoppers who skipped out on the holiday season, and it also helped them save on advertising costs. But so far, I haven’t heard of a holiday alliance that benefits the not-for-profit sector. It’s almost as if the Christmas spirit isn’t nearly as strong or as plentiful as in the days of yore. Perhaps it isn’t so surprising, then, that the results from last year’s Christmas debacle are predictable. More people aren’t shopping at the mall, and
