The control group was maintained on normal drinking water during the experiment. Blood samples from both the controls and CRF groups were taken at the end of the experiment to analyze Cr and BUN. After the rats were sacrificed, their kidney tissue was dissected out for further analysis. Plasma samples from both the controls and CRF groups were harvested to measure Cr and BUN levels at the end of the experiment. From the results obtained, it was found that the rats that received GT had significantly decreased Cr, BUN and proteinuria levels and did not exhibit significant changes in the BUN/Cr ratio and kidney weight compared to the CRF group. Thus, we concluded that, in this chronic rat model of CRF, GT not only prevented the development of uremia and inhibited the progression of renal dysfunction, but also had no adverse effect on kidney function.
